Getting Here
Flying: The closest airport is the Long Island MacArthur Airport (code: ISP) located in Ronkonkoma, New York. It is a rather small airport and is serviced only by Southwest and US Airways. Once you have arrived, the best way to get to Stony Brook is by taking a taxi. This should cost you approximately $30. You may also fly in to one of the larger New York-area airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (code: JFK) located in Queens, New York or LaGuardia Airport (code: LGA) also located in Queens, New York. If you choose to fly into JFK, you can take the AirTrain ($5) from the terminal to the Jamaica station of the LIRR. From there, you can take the LIRR out to Stony Brook. Unfortunately, LGA does not have a similar link to the LIRR, so your best bet would be to take a taxi or shuttle bus from there to Stony Brook.
Train: The University is also accessible by the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road). Take the Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. Trains to and from Penn Station generally require a timed transfer at either Jamaica, Hicksville, or Huntington. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus. You get a cheaper rate if you buy your ticket before boarding, so you can expect to pay between $10.75 and $15.00 for a trip from Penn Station-Stony Brook. If you are taking the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica, you can expect to pay between $8.25 and $11.50 for a trip from Jamaica-Stony Brook.
By Car: From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. If you are coming from New England, you can avoid driving through New York City by taking a ferry (see below).
Ferry: Car ferries cross Long Island Sound from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island. Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left on Nicolls. The University entrances are the first three intersections you come to. For a more scenic and time-consuming drive, you can instead take a ferry from New London, CT, to Orient Point, Long Island and then Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and proceed as above.
