CUPE 3902 -- University of Toronto
From CGEU
Here is the history from CUPE 3902 (formerly CUEW Local 2 and formerly GAA Local 2) at the University of Toronto:
Sexual orientation non-discrimination language – first contract March 1976
Protection against harassment on the grounds of sexual orientation – part of first language protecting against sexual harassment in 1986
“spouse” to include same-sex partners – September 1992
“Gender orientation” =”gender identity or expression” non discrimination language – September 2001
Spousal and dependent coverage – mid-term agreement September 2003 (spouse already includes same-sex partners see above)
Transgender exclusions are not really an issue since we have public primary health care – our health care bargaining is around supplemental benefits.
[edit] LBGT history tidbit
The very first couple to ever serve as such on our union executive did so openly as lesbians in 1977 (they are still together and recently were married). We have had active involvement of our members regardless of sexual orientation throughout our history.
Cheers,
Staff Representative, CUPE 3902
