SAMPLE STUDENT GOVERNMENT OR COUNCIL RESOLUTION


Whereas: Teaching and research assistants perform an invaluable portion of the teaching, research and administrative work at xxx University without the security of a union contract to guarantee them a living wage, workload protections, stable and affordable healthcare, and other benefits.

Whereas: The 2004 decision of the National Labor Relations Board that stripped teaching and research assistants at private colleges and universities of the right to collective bargaining under federal labor law has been condemned by thousands of scholars and human rights activists, including the International Labor Organization, an agency of the United Nations.

Whereas: New federal legislation, the Teaching and Research Assistants Collective Bargaining Rights Act (H.R. 5838 and S. 2891), would amend the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to restore collective bargaining rights to teaching and research assistants at private colleges and universities;

Resolved: that the xxx University Senate supports and strongly urges that the U.S. Congress approve the Teaching and Research Assistants Collective Bargaining Rights Act.
