Talk:Constitution Draft
From CGEU
While I appreciate the rationale behind the debate about the name of our organization, given that some of our locals represent undergraduates, I have a few concerns about the proposed name change from CGEU to the Coalition of Student Employee Unions (CSEU).
1. The language of the Constitution and its adoption will be the subject of much debate at the annual meeting and afterwards. I do not think that we should add to this complex debate by including the contentious issue of the changing of the name.
2. Given the trouble that our movement has had with our status as students (i.e. NLRB decisions and FERPA challenges), I wonder about the ramifications of adding the word "student" to the name of our coalition. While I would like to know the possible legal ramifications of such a change, I think that it is ill advised politically -- we fight against our designation as "primarily students," yet we put "student" in the name of the one organization that ties us all together.

After hearing a similar concern from Nate Johnson of UMass Amherst GEO, I agree on the grounds stated. We should change the name back to CGEU in the draft.
